5 Museums in 1 Location, Historic Palmyra
If you are a local history nerd or a paranormal investigator, you have to plan a visit to Historic Palmyra. I had the pleasure of taking a behind-the-scenes tour of Historic Palmyra through one of my past jobs with Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance. The conglomerate of museums on-site includes the Historical Museum, the Erie Canal Depot, the Print Shop, the Phelps General Store, and the Alling Coverlet Museum.

I started my visit in the Historic Museum. While I had not had any specific paranormal experiences myself, I’m not someone that doesn’t believe in ghosts. While walking around, I was the only one around and I heard people running up and down the stairs, I walked into the civil war room and could barely make it through the door because of the energy change, I immediately became nauseous and had a headache...
My favorite of the five museums was the Phelps General Store, the museum where “time stands still.”
The store closed in 1940, preserving a real time capsule. While many museums are replicas and are pieced back together with similar items, the Phelps General Store was left untouched for years.
Upstairs you can tour where the Phelps’ family home and learn about Sibyl, who lived in the home until her death in 1976 (aged 81). During my visit I was told I needed a buddy if I were to stop and use the restroom as Sibyl was known for locking people in!
Historic Palmyra will host specific events such as ghost walks throughout the year, in addition to museum admission, you can also schedule a private paranormal investigation.
