Can You Survive the Sanitorium? A Haunted History Comes Alive in Mount Morris

If you love a good scare with a side of history, grab your bravest friends and head to Mount Morris this October—because the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA) is unleashing a haunted experience unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Introducing “Haunted House – Survive the Sanitorium,” an immersive, spine-tingling adventure set inside the former Mount Morris Tuberculosis Sanitorium, a sprawling 1930s-era complex that’s creepy even in daylight.

On October 17–18 and October 24–25, the historic Murray Hill Campus will transform into a nightmarish medical laboratory ruled by the deranged Dr. Morte Decesso, a scientist desperate to contain a mysterious illness sweeping through Livingston County.

Visitors will creep through stairwells, tunnels, and treatment rooms, encountering experimental “cures,” ghostly patients, and deranged nurses in a storyline that blurs the line between medicine and madness. The final challenge? Escaping through the actual 1930s doctor’s apartment—if you can find your way out.

“This campus already has a spine-tingling atmosphere,” says GVCA Executive Director Morgan Hellquist, “and layering that with a story about medical experiments gone wrong makes for an unforgettable haunted experience rooted in both history and horror.”

This fright fest is part of GVCA’s Keep the Arts Alive 2025 initiative, raising funds to preserve arts programming across Livingston and Monroe counties. From the local actors bringing the doctor’s twisted world to life, to the stagehands transforming the sanitorium into a cinematic nightmare, this event celebrates artistry in its eeriest form.
