Rochester, we’re going to space. 🌌
Starting Saturday, October 11, the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium is premiering Space: The New Frontier—a brand-new documentary made for IMAX and Giant Screen theaters that’s as close as most of us will ever get to orbit.
Filmed in 8K and projected in full-dome glory, this cinematic adventure takes you behind the scenes of today’s most daring space innovations—from self-assembling habitats to commercial space stations, rocket launches without fuel, and even the construction of the Lunar Gateway that will help humans explore deep space.
“This film immerses you in the human need to explore outer space,” says Jim Bader, Strasenburgh Planetarium Director. And if you’ve ever watched a rocket launch with goosebumps or stared at the night sky wondering what’s next for humanity—this one’s for you.
Meet the Stars (and Star Trek’s Captain!)
Guiding us through this cosmic journey is none other than Chris Pine—yep, that Captain Kirk from Star Trek. His signature voice brings warmth and wonder to every scene. Pine’s love for IMAX documentaries goes back to his own childhood, and now he’s hoping to inspire the next generation of dreamers.
You’ll also meet real-life astronaut Victor Glover, who’s set to become the first Black man to fly around the Moon on the upcoming Artemis mission, and space architect Ariel Ekblaw, who’s reimagining how humans will live in space through her work at the Aurelia Institute at MIT. It’s one part science fiction, one part real life catching up fast.
