A Monet Masterpiece Comes to Rochester: Frontiers of Impressionism Opens at the Memorial Art Gallery

Get ready, Rochester art lovers—this fall, the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) is bringing a bit of Paris to University Avenue.

Opening November 2, 2025, Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum explores the movement that changed the course of art forever. With 52 masterworks from the Worcester Art Museum’s world-renowned collection, this exhibition traces how Impressionism began as a radical idea in 19th-century France and rippled outward to transform the art world—from Europe to the United States.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing a Claude Monet up close, this is your moment. The exhibit includes a 1908 Water Lilies painting—the first one ever purchased by a museum. And yes, it’s coming right here to Rochester.

Alongside Monet, you’ll find works by Renoir, Pissarro, Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and John Singer Sargent, offering a sweeping look at how these artists pushed boundaries with color, light, and brushstroke to capture the fleeting magic of modern life.

Organized by the Worcester Art Museum with support from The Museum Box, this exhibition is a rare chance to experience Impressionism’s global story—without booking a flight to France.

Whether you’re an art history buff, a casual museum-goer, or just looking for a cozy indoor escape this winter, Frontiers of Impressionism is your ticket to beauty, innovation, and a brush with history.
