f you’re craving a night of theater that blends ancient drama with modern flair, The Harley School’s fall Upper School play might just be your ticket. Literally.
From Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, November 1, Harley’s talented student cast will bring Sophocles’ Electra to life, with a 2025 twist, at The Harley School Theater (1981 Clover Street, Rochester).
This isn’t your typical toga-clad tragedy. Under the direction of Tom Deckman, Harley’s Theater Arts Educator, Electra reimagines the centuries-old story through a bold, modern lens. Expect multimedia moments, cinematic flashbacks, and even pop anthems by Alicia Keys and Katy Perry woven into the performance.
“This year begged for something more classical,” says Deckman. “But we wanted to make it relatable; so we’re mixing in multimedia, flashback video and even pop music… to underscore Electra’s journey of empowerment.”
The story centers on Electra, daughter of the murdered King Agamemnon, who is consumed by her drive for justice against her mother, Clytaemnestra, and her mother’s lover, Aegisthus. It’s a powerful story of grief, revenge, and empowerment; one that feels surprisingly timeless in today’s world.
Adding to the immersive experience is original music by Kelly Stevenson and a stunning set designed by Harley’s own Upper School elective design class. Together, they transform the ancient Greek stage into something fresh, visual, and unmistakably modern.
